Not Everyone is Good at Lebanese Memes

So, I was just checking my Facebook feed, and I randomly stumble upon this:

Lebanese Failed Racist Meme

My first reaction was to screenshot it, and yet the sight of those words on that picture of these children makes my blood boil.

This roughly translates to: “Don’t have food, still, donning a f*cking potbelly”.

Well, no, that doesn’t even come close. You see, the word Continue reading

Les Intouchables – interchangeables?

——————————————————————————————————————–
UPDATE:

A lot of you have come here because you were looking for more about Abdel Sellou, the man Driss, played by Omar Sy, was based on. Today (Friday, March 16th), he was featured on French show “C’est au Programme” on France 2 presented by Sophie Davant. For those of you who could not catch it, or don’t speak French, the following is a summary of what was discussed.

By pure coincidence, I was home when that interview aired (it was live and he rocked it), and I have to say this: this is the first time I realize what an accurate depiction of Abdel the character Driss is.

When asked about the events in the movie, Abdel says that Continue reading

The Nahla Gum – The Gum Your Woman Could Be

A while ago, as I was on my way to work, I noticed a few ads, peppered here and there, featuring a model, the brand logo, and a teaser. It wasn’t a brand I had previously heard of: “Nahla”. The product, obviously as part of the 2-tier ad, had not yet been revealed.

In Lebanon and, I suppose, much of the Arab world, the word “Nahla” means a drink of water. It is a common, yet not too common, name for girls.

(what does 'Nahla is new and entertaining' mean?)

The teaser aside, it seemed like the product could be anything from Continue reading

The Sore Winners of Lebanese Basketball

We have some excellent players in our Lebanese basketball teams. And if you’ve never been interested in watching local basketball, let me tell you, this makes for some very thrilling games.

Chabibe - Homentmen

On Wednesday, I went to watch a game between 2nd division teams Homentmen and Chabibe (Country Lodge). For those of you who don’t know who Chabibe are, they are relatively new, yet their strength has surprised many who have made the mistake of underestimating them.

Chabibe - Homentmen

Homentmen’s reputation preceeds them; a tough team, some good shooters, and a coach who has accomplished wonders. The game – officially – ended in a tie, and so 5 extra minutes were awarded, during which Continue reading

Please delete your tweet about us.

When is the last time that someone has apologized to you for having “a life outside of social networks”?

How about when that person manages the online presence of a local business?

I tweet quite often. I tweet about articles, I tweet about events, I tweet about others tweeting about articles, and you get where I’m going with this. A while ago, I must have tweeted something that upset this guy.

Asking me to remove my tweet Continue reading

Breaking up with Civilization – Two days at the Orange House Project

Last week, I had the pleasure of breaking the usual routine and escape to the Orange House Project. I knew I needed to break up with civilization for a while and something told me OHP was just the place to go.

Flowers
We left on a Friday but faced no traffic whatsoever. Driving there took us about an hour and a half but that’s because I almost drove us to Palestine – but that will have to be for another trip.

I won’t fully describe the Continue reading

The Ban on Smoking and Other Thoughts

Two days ago, a law banning smoking indoors and in closed spaces in Lebanon was passed. Congrats? Yes. Will there be a ginormous difference between what-should-be and what-will-be, between law and implementation? Absolutely.

No SmokingI was checking reactions via tweets and Facebook statuses (and comments), and some took a direction I’m not really sure of. For the most, it went like this: Continue reading
